Principles of creating presentations for online speaking

There are many articles on how to prepare a presentation for an offline presentation. They rely on the fact that slides are shown on a large screen in one pre-known format. It’s different online: viewers will see the performance from the screens of different gadgets.

According to Yandex.Radar, the share of mobile traffic in Russia in March 2021 is 60%. We can safely say that a significant part of the audience will watch the performance and presentation from the screens of smartphones.

Here are four tips to help you make your presentation equally good on a laptop or iPhone 5.

Tip 1: Ditch small icons and text in favor of large, contrasting objects that will be clearly visible on any gadget. Do not include video or complex animation into your presentation.

Small screens and connection quality greatly affect the perception of the picture. Leave only the bare minimum on the slide. If you are worried about the content and cannot refuse #manybooks – make a separate summary with details. Send or sell it after the show. To show the video, send the link to the chat and place the QR code on the slide.

Tip 2: Choose a corner of the slide that doesn’t contain important information. The speaker’s head will be located there on the smartphone screen. Before speaking, ask to move the window with the head to this corner.

For the convenience of layout, create a protective field from the guides. They can also be used to line up the slide, like a notebook – so you can not only avoid getting into the “blind spots”, but also place objects evenly and neatly.

Tip 3: Change slides more often and use phrases to bring attention back to the presentation: “In this graph, we see the dependence of the artificial meat market on the level of prohibition of firearms.”

The audience unconsciously prevents themselves from perceiving the performance, while simultaneously doing side matters. More slides = more trigger phrases that return to the screen. Moderately exaggerate the principle of “one thought – one slide” into “one thought – two slides.” The structure “question – answer” will add organicity.

Tip 4: Don’t include complex animations in your presentation. If you need to show a video, link to it – let people read it by opening it in their browser. For links, you can use chat, as well as duplicate the QR code on the slide.

Everyone has a different connection speed and, accordingly, a different quality of broadcast playback. Often, complex animations in the presentation are played in jerks, the video slows down, the sound lags and does not coincide with what is happening on the screen. To avoid this, avoid embedding videos and complex animations in your presentation.

Tip 5: Practice by videotaping yourself. Take a look, fix the mistakes and correct them on the next trip. Perform this cycle at least twice.

It’s hard to connect with your audience online. From this, the tempo is lost, the accents disappear, the speaker is deflated towards the end. Ideally, rehearse as if your performance is a pre-recorded video with bad takes cut out.
